Religious Education - Grades K-6

Our Religious Education program is committed to helping the youth of our parish reflect on and deepen their Catholic faith and relationship with God.

Students acquire knowledge of the teachings, beliefs, and tradition of the Catholic Church through reading and engaging Scripture as well as through opportunities for prayer and reflection. Second grade students prepare for the sacraments of Eucharist (Holy Communion) and Reconciliation (Confession) as part of their regular religious education classes. We also provide sacramental preparation for children in grades three and above who have not yet received First Eucharist and First Reconciliation. Students, with families, are expected to participate regularly in weekend Mass to be active in their faith, worship with their community, and practice what they learn and believe.

Religious education guides children in coming to an intimate relationship with God by means of the head, heart, and hands. Knowledge allows the mind to know God through the intellect and information. The heart allows children to develop this intimate relationship through prayer, experience, reflection, and contemplation. The hands are guided to serve through projects of giving to others and to increase their knowledge and love of God.

While our Religious Education Program allows for formal sacramental preparation and faith formation, we recognize parents and guardians as the primary educators of faith for your children. Our goal is to encourage and support you in this role. Please let us know what we can do for you.

Class Schedules

Classes for kindergarten through grade six meet weekly on Sunday mornings from 10:45 to 11:45 AM, as well as Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 4:15 to 5:15 PM.   Classes are held September to April.

Catechists (Religious Education Teachers)

We have a wonderful and prepared teaching staff of around 60 catechists. There is always a great need for new catechists to volunteer. All lesson plans and a helpful teaching manual are provided to each K-6 catechist. Additional volunteers to serve as substitute teachers, hall monitors and parking lot monitors are always needed and most appreciated. Please call for information on our specific needs and to volunteer. We look forward to hearing from you!

Our student enrollment reaches over 600 students in grades K-11. Knowing that life is very busy, it is important to register for class early in order to obtain your first choice class assignment. To enroll your child in religious education, please print and complete the Religious Education Registration Form (PDF) and return to the Religious Education Office at 1382 Highland Avenue, Needham, MA 02492, Attention: Debbie Coyle.

Tuition per student is $100 with a family cap of $300. Please let us know if you are in need of financial assistance.

Please note: All volunteers at Saint Joseph parish are required by the Archdiocese of Boston to complete the VIRTUS Training session “Protecting God’s Children” as well as a CORI background check and to sign a Code of Conduct form.
