Justice and Peace Committee

Established in 1987

Our Mission: The Justice and Peace Committee offers programs to promote a better understanding of Catholic Social Teaching and sponsors activities which provide parishioners opportunities to foster respect for the dignity of others, lift up the poor, and work for the common good.

Starting now, in 2020, in conjunction with the Diocesan initiative, we will be striving to increase awareness of the issue of racial justice, educating ourselves, reflecting prayerfully, and collaborating with others to find ways to effect change.  We invite all parishioners to join us. The list of resources below includes books, articles, and short videos.*

Please note that the activities listed below are for a normal year and have been modified or eliminated during the Covid crisis. Meetings are on Zoom. If you are interested in joining, please contact Ellen Benoit at ebenoit73@verizon.net for the zoom invitation or more information about our activities.

The projects that we invite parishioners to participate in each year include:

  • Jesse Tree Project:

Advent collection of gifts for families in East Boston
  • Lenten Collection:

Money and items to support CRUDEM’s Hôpital Sacré Coeur in Haiti. Visit crudem.org
  • St. Francis House Collection:

Mid-winter collection of warm winter clothing for the homeless in Boston served by the Saint Francis House. Visit stfrancishouse.org
  • Sponsored lectures:
One to two times a year we engage speakers to present information on current social justice issues to our parish community.

  • Rosie’s Place:
Twice a year we raise money to sponsor a meal, then we bring volunteers to Rosie’s Place, a women’s shelter in Boston, to prepare and serve the meal. Visit rosiesplace.orgsiesplace.org

  • Food Drive:

Ongoing weekly collection of non-perishable food for the Needham Community Council. If you would like to bring the food from the Church to the Community Council, please click on the link to sign up. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0d4caaa62aa2f49-driving
